"I paint because it's there. I look at a scene, building, still life or whatever and see the patterns and colours. I try to reflect this in the beauty and colours of the Cote D'Azure. The shapes of a still life, and of New York where I see buildings with unusual shapes. And of course with paintings, cats which quite often creep into my still life."
"Art seeks not the ordinary, but the exceptional: with the moment past just hinted at and the next instant implied. Our need for recognition of nature, and truth, drives man’s creativity in all areas, and art in particular – looking to place before us visions of reality to consider."
Quick field sketches, observation and photos are vital to Sarais's work, as this helps to add authenticity to her work in the studio. She also loves to paint cats, both domestic and big cats, portraying their beauty and elegance.
Jackie inherited a talent for drawing from her grandparents who were both commercial illustrators. When she left school at 16, she started her working life as an animal nurse and found the inpatients made good subjects to study!
Helen strives to capture a 'moment in time' otherwise unnoticed. She constantly sees wonderment in so many things around her that it feels like a race to capture those moments onto paper. The challenge is always being able to do the painting justice so that others can share the beauty of that special moment.
In her work, Christine likes to experiment with new techniques. Lately, this has meant mixed media, gold leaf and exciting backgrounds – she's always on the lookout for something original to enhance her feline portraits but, fundamentally, it’s about bringing out the cat’s character and beauty.
Avril is a long-standing member of Croydon Art Society and has run an amateur group called Mixed Media which successfully exhibited in Croydon, Bletchingley, Sutton and Bromley for 25 years. She has been an Associate Member of SOFA for many years.
Marian likes to combine her artistic gift with quirky scenarios and humour to capture light-hearted observations of cats, especially Siamese. She usually works in watercolour and pen, but also loves the colours, effects and excitement produced in reduction lino printing.
